It is a University with a well-known reputation both nationally and internationally, with state-of-the art curricula and graduate programmes, considerable research activity and initiatives that reflect its dynamic character. It was established in 1973 and operated during the academic year 1977-1978. Today, approximately 10628 students attend the University. The University's staff consists of 580 Teaching and Research Staff members. Its' operation is supported by more than 400 administrative staff. The University of Crete is developed in two cities and three campuses:

At Rethymnon Faculties operate in the recently constructed University Campus, located in the area of Gallos. The buildings cover an area of approximately 30,000 square meters.

At Heraklion the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Departments of Physics and Biology operate in the recently constructed facilities in Voutes, in an area of 49,000 square meters (Voutes Campus). The remaining Departments and the administrative offices operate at Knossos, in prefabricated facilities (27,0000 square meters). The gradual relocation in the Voutes University Campus will be completed within the next four years. Faculties The following Faculties operate at Rethymnon, which is the seat of the University:

The Faculty of Education consisting of the Departments: Primary Education and pre-School Education.

The following Faculties operate at Heraklion:

The Faculty of Science consisting of the Departments: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Sciences, Applied Mathematics and Material Science and Technology.

Technical Univercity of Crete

Most important than arriving at the target place is what you will acquire, learn, smell, feel and see during your journey to the target place. That is what the Technical University of Crete offers to our students.

The Technical University of Crete is an Institution of higher education, which gives emphasis on both teaching and research. The six academic departments established after 1984 have set very high scopes. The fifty seven laboratories are very well equipped with high technology infrastructure and well skilled personnel. Concerning the faculty members, most of them had already an international carrier, before coming to Chania. There are five engineering departments, that is the Department of Management & Production Engineering, the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering, the Department of Electronic Engineering & Computer Engineering, the Department of Environmental Engineering and the Department of Architectural Engineering. In addition, we have the Department of Sciences, which offers only postgraduate studies. All of our departments offer post graduate studies, which include course work and examinations, as well as doctoral degrees.

One of the strong points of our Institution is research. With a total of 210 research and development programs and a budget approaching the amount of 19.000.000€, the Technical University of Crete is among the top in Greece in performing research. As a consequence, almost all of our 560 graduate students and candidates for a doctoral degree are employed by their professors who have financial support for a research program. In addition, the Technical University of Crete is among the first Greek Institutions with the highest rate of research publications per faculty member. One of our scopes is to strengthen even more the basic sciences offered in the departments curricula and to attract the best researchers in the fields of our interest.

Finding ways to serve the society and offer the best possible quality of engineers is one of our main targets.

University of Crete - Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine started its operation in 1984, thanks to the persistent efforts and vision of an enlightened provisional Governing Committee. Despite the great difficulties encountered, the new Faculty had the great insight to include in its ranks an outstanding academic staff and other personnel of high sense of responsibility and professionalism. Thus, in a rather short period of time it managed to perform efficiently in its new campus, encompassing a modern and functional 24,000 square meters building complex, along with a newly built and well-equipped 62,000 square meters University Hospital. The fulfillment of these early goals of the Faculty was substantially facilitated by the fact that other major Faculties of the University of Crete, as well as the Foundation for Research and Technology of Crete, had already been successfully established and had begun to create a scientific tradition.

The students who have filled the classes of the Faculty of Medicine so far represent the best among the Greek youth. This fact is substantiated not only by their outstanding grades during the entrance exams, but also by their subsequent performance during their University studies. They receive high praise from National and International centers in which they undertake their postgraduate training. High praise is also given to our PhD graduates who travel to highly acclaimed international institutions for postdoctoral training, many of whom return to leading positions in Greek Universities and Research Institutes. The School of Medicine currently enrolls 700 medical students and 162 graduate students, while the number of faculty members and teaching personnel has risen to 110.

The administration and the faculty of the Faculty of Medicine are dedicated to excellence in teaching and research and strive to ensure that this Institute, on the island of Crete, will play a leading role in medical and biomedical education world wide.

Science & Technology Park of Crete

The idea for a Technology Park in Crete dates back to 1988, when it was first nurtured by key individuals in Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), one of the most respectable research institutes of the country, well known all over Europe in the scientific circles. The Managing Company of STEP-C (EDAP SA) was established in Dec. 1993, with an initial capital of 40 Million Drs. The main point was to provide the significant research activities of the Institutes with a reliable interface to the outside world and to assume a significant but mostly a specific role in the development of the region. Also to enable companies-members of the STEP-C to exploit the technology opportunities offered by the Research Institutes and become key vehicles in the technology transfer process.

STEP-C collaborates today with many organisations of both the public and the private sectors. It includes and provides services to 25 companies and organisations as full and associate members. These companies, some of which are spin-offs operate in diverse sectors of technological and economic activities.

Thus, a main role of the Science and Technology Park of Crete would be to diffuse the know-how accumulated within the academic communities and research institutes in the appropriate directions leading to the creation of a third development pole on the island, next to the agriculture and the tourist industry.
